Difficult Conversations in the Classroom

Welcome to the Difficult Conversations in the Classroom resource. This resource guides instructors through possible causes, types, and stages of difficult conversations in the classroom. It also contains practices and prompts designed to enhance personal awareness, as well as strategies to implement directly in the classroom as part of one's teaching practice.

This web resource is intended as a starting point for instructors teaching in a University classroom context. We recognize that difficult conversations are themselves complex, as well as the causes. While this resource provides an introduction to navigating difficult conversations in the classroom, we recognize that it does not address every aspect or challenge that may arise. In particular, systemic issues such as structural inequities, institutional policies, or broader societal influences are complex and beyond the scope of this guide. We encourage instructors to continue exploring these important dimensions as part of their ongoing professional development.

This resource has been created by the Office of Teaching and Learning in consultation with the Office of the Associate Vice-President Academic, the Office of Teaching and Learning, Student Experience, the Office of Diversity and Human Rights, and Learning & Development, with review and feedback from the Teaching and Learning Network and the Community Engaged Scholarship Institute

Due to the nature of difficult conversations, we anticipate adapting, expanding, and enhancing this resource at regular intervals. We welcome your feedback to help us improve.
