The Black community in Canada is not monolithic. There are four main categories of Black people in Canada: Canadians born in Canada who are descendants of the first Black settlers from the 1600s; African Americans from the United States; migrants from the Caribbean; and migrants from the African continent.

Flora Francis came to Canada from Trinidad and Tobago. She joined the University of Guelph in 1959 as the assistant librarian at the Ontario Veterinary College. Over the next thirty-six years, she dedicated herself to both personal growth and community service at the University of Guelph. Flora has been honoured with a collection named after her at the McLaughlin Library and an entire library named in her honour at the Guelph Black Heritage Society.
