Natasha Henry is an educational assistant. Anti-oppressive pedagogy - an approach to teaching and learning designed mainly by educators from equity-seeking groups to combat the harms of white colonial education and to instill hope and resilience in students – challenges the silos in education. Librarians, teachers at all levels of the educational systems, ancillary staff members and educational assistants are all seen as valuable people within the bigger educational system.

What does an Educational Assistant (EA) do?

EAs works with students who may have many diverse needs. We provide behavioural, safety, medical and physical support based on the needs of a student. In some cases, EAs may assist with toileting, positioning and transferring students and equipment and application of Behaviour Modifications Strategies (BMS). Each student is unique and we work with them individually depending on their needs.  This allows our students to be able to manage in School individually but also in group setting.

An educational assistant role can be very exciting because I feel as though I have an impact on students lives by helping them overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Being part of their growth is rewarding.  It makes me feel amazing! Seeing my students’ confidence grow as a result of my care gives me purpose and I feels like I'm accomplishing so much.
