Key Practices for Cultivating Lifewide Engaged Learning

Cultivating spaces of possibility invites us - as educators and learners - to embrace optimism as we navigate our journeys as lifelong and lifewide learners. How do we remain curious about the world around us, open to building on our prior knowledge, and committed to putting what we’re learning into practice on our campuses and in our broader communities? How do we support our students as they develop their own knowledge toolkits for their own current and future spaces of possibility? This interactive keynote draws on international and multi-disciplinary research to explore key practices for cultivating lifewide engaged learning. After briefly introducing all six key practices for fostering engaged learning (Moore, 2023), the keynote will focus on three of the practices: :

  • Facilitating relationships
  • Acknowledging and building on prior knowledge
  • Fostering reflection on learning and self

With attention to a variety of learning contexts, ranging from large in-person classes to online education to work-integrated learning, the keynote will explore concrete strategies for cultivating these practices in our work with students to build and sustain a constellation of support for student learning, one that enhances wellbeing and professional growth for students and instructors alike.
