Professors' Perspectives on Integrating AI in Higher Education: Insights from ChatGPT

What is this Research About?

The researchers explore the impact of ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration in university teaching, focusing on professors' perspectives. They conducted a survey at Trakia University to gauge educators' views on the advantages, disadvantages, and ethical considerations of using AI in higher education. The study identified potential methods for incorporating ChatGPT into the educational system, emphasizing how professors believe AI should be implemented. The researchers aim to develop an ethical and effective approach to integrating AI into university curricula through professors' experiences.

What did the Researchers Do?

University professors from Trakia University conducted a survey to explore the role of ChatGPT in their daily lives and educational practices. The survey aimed to understand professors' concerns about integrating AI into education. It also considered Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) for automatically grading quizzes and assignments. The researchers asked the professors three key questions: their knowledge of ChatGPT, the benefits and drawbacks of using it, and their perspective on incorporating ChatGPT into the educational system. They analyzed the responses to develop strategies for integrating AI into the university curriculum.

What did the Researchers Find?

The researchers found a range of opinions among professors regarding the use of AI. Nearly half of the professors, more specifically 49.4% saw potential in leveraging ChatGPT for developing learning scenarios, presentations, and lectures. 47.1% of the professors considered using ChatGPT for creating exam questions, quizzes, and assessments. However, concerns were also prevalent. A significant majority 73.6% worried about students receiving false or biased information from ChatGPT, while 67.8% expressed concerns about cheating. The instructors from the survey recognized the substantial benefits in integrating AI into education, while also being cautious about risks in doing so.

Implementing AI in education is complex, with instructors holding diverse opinions on integrating ChatGPT into the curriculum. This technology allows professors to easily create and edit presentations, rubrics, documents, and more. Professors can use Artificial Intelligence to create exam questions, assessments, and quizzes. They can also use it to automate feedback or emails sent to students. ChatGPT’s idea generation further enables professors to incorporate creativity into class lectures, keeping students engaged. With proper implementation, AI can significantly enhance and streamline professors' day-to-day tasks, making a beneficial and effective impact.
