Dr. Melanie-Anne Atkins

Dr. Melanie-Anne Atkins is the Associate Director, Student Experience at the University of Guelph and a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach. A visionary leader, educational developer, and public speaker, Dr. Atkins has delivered over 300 presentations and works with organizations to develop training and assessment tools that build individual and institutional capacity in the areas of mental health literacy, anti-racism, EDI, and intercultural communication. Dr. Atkins has a special interest in engaging students with traditionally marginalized identities in the academy, peer mentorship and education, holistic student development, anti-oppressive practices in education, and students as partners in teaching and learning.

Panel Session: Transformative Education Practice at the University of Guelph

Join us for this engaging panel session where three UofG faculty members share their transformative teaching practices and explore the practicalities, benefits and obstacles of incorporating transformative learning at the course and institutional levels. The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A session, offering attendees the chance to probe deeper into transformative pedagogy and consider how they might bring transformative learning into their own teaching.

Dr. Jason Coe

Dr. Jason Coe is a Professor at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. After graduating from the College in 2001, he returned from mixed-animal veterinary practice to complete a PhD in the area of veterinary communications in 2008. In the same year, Jason joined the Ontario Veterinary College in the Department of Population Medicine where in his current role he coordinates the clinical-communication curriculum across all 4 years of the veterinary program and is involved in teaching students about the relationships that exist between people and animals.

Over the past two decades, Jason has established an international reputation for his leadership in veterinary communications, primary-care veterinary education and understanding the human-animal bond. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, contributed to several book chapters, and is regularly invited to speak nationally and internationally. Jason currently holds the VCA Canada Chair in Relationship-Centred Veterinary Medicine (2021-2026) at the Ontario Veterinary College. In 2021, Jason was honoured with the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award for his notable contributions to the veterinary profession and in 2022, he founded the research program Relationship-Centred Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College.

Dr. Adam Davies

Dr. Adam Davies, PhD, OCT, RECE (they/them) is an Assistant Professor who teaches in the Genders, Sexualities, and Social Change program in the College of Arts at the University of Guelph. Adam is a passionate educator, researcher, writer, poet, and activist who emphasizes critical and emancipatory theorizing and activism that promotes more prosperous futures through creative storytelling and research. In particular, Adam's research investigates systems of exclusion within educational curricula and institutions, including early years, K-12 schooling, and higher education. Adam is a neurodivergent, nonbinary, queer, and Mad educator and scholar who infuses autobiographical storytelling and writing into their advocacy and academic research. Adam is an Ontario Certified Teacher and Registered Early Childhood Educator and holds a PhD in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Development with collaborative specializations in Women and Gender Studies and Sexual Diversity Studies from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. Adam has worked for many years as an early years educator, anti-oppression and equity consultant, university professor, and sexuality educator. Adam's work has been featured in high-quality peer-reviewed academic journals, such as Curriculum InquiryChildren & Society, and Equity & Excellence in Education, to name a few.

Dr. Kim Martin

Dr. Kim Martin is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Guelph, where she also co-created and teaches in the interdisciplinary program Culture & Technology Studies. Her research areas include the use of linked open data (LOD) for cultural heritage, serendipity in digital environments, and user-experience of LOD interfaces. In all her classes, Kim brings a hands-on approach to learning, often employing experiential learning strategies that encourage students to think of ways they can make an impact outside of the classroom.
